  • Introduction

    Her Parents were: Grace (Baker) Adams and Ervin (Menzo) Amenzo Adams-she was born in 1901-she was raised in Leslie Michigan-she had many siblings many of which died in infancy. Her younger sister, Ida, married Cyril Adams of Pleasant Lake Michigan-she died in childbirth on 05/15/1921 with her first child, Faye Adams just short of her 17th birthday. Melvina went on to marry Cyril and raised her nephew as her own then went on to give birth to 2 more sons, Marvin and Gilbert Adams and 1 daughter, Ruth Adams- Cyril passed away in 1934. Melvina (or Vinnie as she was called) raised the children herself. After Ruth married in 1951 Melvina married Martin Barden and lived in his family home at Pleasant Lake Michigan. She was my maternal Grandmother.

The winners in 1901 were: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen for physics, Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff for chemistry, Emil Adolf von Behring for physiology or medicine, Sully Prudhomme for literature, and Jean Henry Dunant and Frédéric Passy for peace.

In 1929, by the time she was 28 years old, on March 4th, Herbert Hoover became the 31st President of the United States. Early in his presidency, the October stock market crash - "Black Tuesday" - occurred, which lead to the Great Depression. None of his economic policies were able to make a dent in the Depression. This lead to one term and the election of Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt winning the 1933 election in a landslide.
