Meg Ann (Tuohey) Rich was born on February 11, 1957 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Monroe County, New York United States to Robert L Tuohey and Edith Kathryn (O'Brien) Tuohey, and has siblings Michael Robert Tuohey, Mary Kathryn (Tuohey) Mattico, Patrick Richard-Frances Tuohey, Timothy Thomas Tuohey, Matthew Cornelius Tuohey, Mark O'Brien Tuohey, and Nora Jane Tuohey. She married Martin Joseph Rich on April 23, 1976 in Shelby charter Township, Macomb County, Michigan and they later divorced. Meg Rich has children Gregory Leo Rich, Patrick Joseph Rich, and Daniel Robert Rich.

In 1957, in the year that Meg Ann (Tuohey) Rich was born, on September 24th, the "Little Rock Nine" (nine African-American students) entered Little Rock High School. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had previously prevented the students from entering the school at the beginning of the term with the Arkansas National Guard - they blocked the door. President Eisenhower ordered federal troops - the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army - to guard the students and allow them entry.
