Maxine Margaret (Shalhoub) Gensler was born on September 21, 1945 in Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin United States to Helen (Seroogy) Shalhoub and Joseph Shalhoub, and has siblings Sherry Marie Matzdorff, William John Shalhoub, Michael Thomas Shalhoub, Susan Elizabeth Larkin, Jane Helen DuBois, Deborah Ann Landin, Daniel James Shalhoub, Anthony Marc Shalhoub, and Amy Jacqueline Gialdini. She married Robert Willis Gensler in 1967 in Green Bay, Brown County and they later divorced in 1978 in Green Bay. Maxine Gensler has a child Tobin John Gensler.

In 1945, in the year that Maxine Margaret Gensler was born, on March 12th, a riot erupted at a Japanese internment camp in Santa Fe New Mexico. Two days earlier, white shirts with the Rising Sun on the back had been confiscated and the prisoners objected. Three leaders of the protest were removed and sent to another camp. Guards at the Santa Fe camp were armed with submachine guns, shotguns, and gun masks. On the morning of the 12th, prisoners began throwing rocks at the guards. When the "rioters" wouldn't disperse, the guards were ordered to use tear gas and batons. Four men were badly injured as a result.
