Matthew Wilson Foggo of Geelong Australia was born in 1888 in Geelong to Matthew Foggo and Ellen Nellie (Wilson) Foggo. He had siblings Nellie Violet Foggo, Jessie Muriel Caisley Fogg, Sydney David Foggo, Florence Margaret Foggo, John Robert Foggo, Myrtle Lillian Foggo, Elsie May (Foggo) Shields, and Janet Victoria Foggo. Matthew Foggo married Janet Elizabeth Condie in 1920, and died at age 75 years old on December 23, 1964.

In 1888, in the year that Matthew Wilson Foggo was born, Irishman John Robert Gregg published a pamphlet in the U.S., teaching his first version of shorthand - Gregg shorthand. When he improved on the first version and published it 5 years later, Gregg shorthand became popular.

In 1890, when he was just 2 years old, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.
