Matsuko (Iwase) Haffner of Alexandria, Fairfax County, VA was born on April 18, 1929. She was married to Robert Haffner in 1952, and had children Rosemary (Haffner) Pace, Suzanne (Haffner) Goudeau, Cathleen (Haffner) Haffner, and Patricia Haffner. Matsuko Haffner died at age 76 years old on September 4, 2005, and was buried at Quantico National Cemetery Section 19 Site 400 18424 Joplin Road (route 619), in Triangle.

    On September 4, 2005 at her home in Alexandria, VA of cancer. She leaves to mourn, her husband of 53 years, Army Major (Ret.) Robert J. Haffner; four daughters, Rosemary (and husband, Robert) Pace of Woodbridge, VA, Suzanne (and husband, Russ) Goudeau of Woodbridge, VA, Cathleen Haffner of Fairfax, VA and Patricia Haffner of Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren, Traci Pace, Andrew and Angela Shaffer and Michelle (and husband, Keir) Tracy; and one great-grandchild, Emily Tracy. Also survived by three brothers and a sister in Japan; nieces and nephews in Massachusetts and Japan. She joins a previously deceased sister and niece of Massachusetts. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 11 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Demaine Springfield-Annandale Chapel, Backlick and Edsall Rds., Springfield, VA, where a service will be held on September 12 at 12 Noon. Private interment at Quantico National Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be in the form of flowers or a contribution in her memory to The American Cancer Society, 124 Park St., SE, Vienna, VA 22180.

In 1929, in the year that Matsuko (Iwase) Haffner was born, American Samoa officially became a U.S. territory. Although a part of the United States since 1900, the Ratification Act of 1929 vested "all civil, judicial, and military powers in the President of the United States of America".

In 1943, she was merely 14 years old when on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
