  • Introduction

    Grandma loved me. She once sewed my teddy bear for me. When years later Cleaning out things she owned a copy of my year book was found. She went out of her way to get this . She ALWAYS made me feel so special. Dad would tell my sister Chris and me befor we went in her house. NO CANDY or SODA. OK that laster 2 feet in the house :) she took us to the kitchen sat us at the table with both. I have her hand embroidered bedspreads 2 of them for my grandchildren someday. Her and Grandpa Nicholas there sofa and chairs plus a wall picture with the crucifiction that were in the hall room of her house. I am one of Nicholas Tostanoskis daughters. I also have the wedding photo and other family photos. Some are I belive at my sister Nancys house.Grandma is the oldest living Tostanoski. Grampa bought his brothers and a sister to the USA. One ship was the SS Brenin it was later burned and had 3 masts. It was the ship that snuck out of the US Harbor in a book Shadow Voyage.Grandmas name may not have been Mary it was shortened from the name on her baptismal paper from Mt Carmel PA.

In 1899, in the year that Mary T Tostanoski was born, on February 4th, the Philippine–American War began. The Philippines objected to the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1898, that transferred possession of the Philippines from Spain to the U.S. Filipinos began a fight for independence and fighting between U.S. forces and those of the Philippine Republic broke out. On June 2nd, the Philippines officially declared war on the United States.

In 1918, she was 19 years old when in January, President Wilson presented his Fourteen Points, which assured citizens that World War I was being fought for a moral cause and outlined a plan for postwar peace in Europe. The only leader of the Allies to present such a plan, the Europeans thought Wilson was being too idealistic. The points included free trade, open agreements, democracy and self-determination. They were based on the research and suggestions of 150 advisors.
