Mary Black died at age 66 years old on October 21, 1939 in Dandenong, City of Greater Dandenong County, and was buried at Mansfield Public Cemetery in Mansfield, Mansfield Shire County.

BLACK. - On the 21st October, at a private hospital, Dandenong, Mary Ann, beloved wife of the late Joseph Black, and loving mother of May ( Mrs. Fitzsimmons), Matthew Richard ( deceased ), Dorcas ( Mrs. Knapsey ), Agnes ( Mrs. Bell ), Gertrude ( Mrs. Holdsworth ), Hazel, Doreen ( Mrs. Yann ). Late of Mansfield, aged 67 years.

In 1872, in the year that Mary Ann (Crawford) Black was born, on December 4th, the empty American ship Mary Celeste was found in the Atlantic Ocean. Still seaworthy, under partial sail, and with one lifeboat missing, what happened on her is still a mystery. Her cargo and provisions were intact and she was used as a cargo vessel for another 12 years but the people onboard were never seen again

In 1888, she was 16 years old when on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.
