A photo of Life in Sheridan, Coon Creek Picnic: My father Emery Holmes with my mother Mattie & Lula Lewis, Harry Nonguisses, & Miss Curtis taken at Coon Creek. My folks knew one another for ten years before they married. Dad would go to Sheridan & Mama would take him to collect gooseberries or mulberries, go on picnics, or to dances. She also went to Auburn with Aunt Lou. Their families knew them well. Sometimes Mama would go to the station and dad would blow the train whistle as he went by.

When my grandfather died, Mama & Aunt Lou went to live with Aunt Mary French in Lincoln. They stuck together when they went to work as housekeepers in Placerville. They worked the summer of 1905 at Deer Park Springs Hotel between Truckee & Tahoe City, Lake Tahoe. Tourists went by stage from Truckee. Standing, with one of Mama's friends sitting, this tintype must have been taken at the Fair in Sacramento.

A photo of Martha Lewis and Emery Holmes: Mama and Dad took the train up to Reno and were married on January 8, 1908. They honeymooned at the Riverside Hotel. Mama kept her seamstress job & lived in Sacramento & Dad had a room in Roseville. "July 29th: If Mrs Gill does not come to terms pretty darn quick, we will go to Blue Canyon & live in a tent! What is the difference between a sewing machine & a Kiss? One sews seams nice & the other seems SO nice!" - Emery

A photo of Elizabeth and Annie Cults, Mattie Lewis, and Ira S. Jones.

I know my mother went out with Ira Jones before she met my father but she was never serious with him. They used to go to picnics at Mt Pleasant & dances at the Shed. Sheridan was known as Union Shed when Eugene Rogers built a freight team shed in 1857 for the teams that came through the crossroads. When Mama was young, there was a Ball every month & people came from Auburn, Grass Valley, Marysville, and Sacramento.

Mama Visits at The Woods Resort
Mama Visits at The Woods Resort
My sister Verna brought Mama up to Lake Tahoe to visit the year after my father died. Mama & I always had a good time together. One time, I took Mama to Woodrow Jang's store in Marysville & found 3 nice dresses for Mama. Verna couldn't get her to buy any. I bought my outfit at Joanne's in Walnut Creek. I liked the clothes she carried.

When Dad was a Fireman on the Southern Pacific, he roomed in Sacramento with the Schaap family. He wrote to Mom: 'If you go to Sacramento, you can go to work in Weinstocks sewing. I was talking to Mayme Schaap & she said if you was there you could go to work Monday. And if Lou could sew, she could get in there too.' -Emery Holmes

This is my favorite photo of Mama & Aunt Lou. I just love this picture! Both were homemakers, made jelly, canned fruit, & made all our clothes & underwear which Mama trimmed with crochet. Before marriage, they worked at Weinstocks as seamstresses. They never separated until they had to move from Hammonton. They would talk hours on the phone & loved Gunsmoke on TV. It reminded them of Sheridan where they grew up.
