She married Adam Riess on February 23, 1893 in Kent, Stephenson County, and had a child George Raymond Riess. Martha Riess died at age 92 years old on September 8, 1962 in Freeport, Stephenson County, and was buried at Lena Burial Park in Lena.

Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time.
