Margaret Mary (McGinley) Coleman was born on September 1, 1924 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania United States to John Joseph McGinley Sr. and Anna Theresa McGinley, and had siblings Rose Ann Katella, Daniel James McGinley, Catherine Theresa McCrane, and John Joseph McGinley Jr.. She married Michael Joseph Coleman Jr. in 1948 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, and they were married until Michael's death on September 13, 1997 in Yardley, Bucks County. She had children Margaret Anne Coleman, Michael Joseph Coleman III, Dennis Patrick Coleman, Christina Jennifer Pontious, and John Joseph Coleman. Margaret Coleman died at age 86 years old on January 11, 2011 in Voorhees Township, Camden County, NJ, and was buried on January 14, 2011 at Resurrection Cemetery 5201 Hulmeville Rd, in Bensalem, Bucks County, PA.

In 1924, in the year that Margaret Mary Coleman was born, in May, wealthy college students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb kidnapped and killed 14 year old Robert Franks "in the interest of science". Leopold and Loeb thought that they were intellectually superior and that they could commit the perfect crime and not be caught. They were brought in for questioning within 8 days and quickly confessed. Clarence Darrow was hired as their defense lawyer, getting them life imprisonment instead of a death sentence. Loeb was eventually killed in prison - Leopold was released after 33 years, dying of a heart attack at age 66.

In 1935, when she was merely 11 years old, on September 8th, Louisiana Senator Huey Long was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss. Weiss was shot and killed immediately by Long's bodyguards - Long died two days later from his injuries. Long had received many death threats previously, as well as threats against his family. He was a powerful and controversial figure in Louisiana politics (and probably gained power through multiple criminal acts). His opponents became frustrated with their attempts to oust him and Dr. Weiss was the son-in-law of one of those opponents. His funeral was attended by 200,000 mourners.
