In 1865, in the year that Margaret Ann (Dunlevy) Sanders was born, on September 26th, Champ Ferguson, a Confederate guerrilla, became the first person to be convicted of war crimes arising from the Civil War. (There was only one other person convicted of war crimes in the Civil War.) He was found guilty by a U.S. Army tribunal on 23 charges arising from the murder of 53 people. On October 20, he was hung.
