Madelyn Elton Vose, daughter of Carl and Lillian Vose, on February 28, 2011, aged 86 in Hadley, Massachusetts. Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, she was a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music, class of 1944 and the New England Conservatory. A mezzo-soprano, her voice was described as “… rich and full with the true contralto quality in the low register and a suitably brilliant top.” by critic Warren Story Smith of the Boston Post after her professional recital debut in 1949. She performed with the Little Orchestra Society in concert versions of Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte”, Strauss’ ‘Ariadne auf Naxos”, and Ravel’s “L’Enfant et les Sortileges”. Of this last, Francis Perkins of the New York Herald Tribune wrote: “One of the most memorable episodes was the Child’s voice, warmly and expressively provided by Miss Vose, floated over a hushed and luminous orchestra. A scholarship student at Tanglewood, she sang the role of Orfeo in Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice”, appeared in Mozart’s “Titus”, and created a key role in the first performance of Robert Middleton’s American opera, “Life Goes to a Party”. Her early training in ballet and dramatics came to her aid in 1950 when she portrayed “Carmen” in Allentown, PA, where ‘… singing with flawless tonal beauty she gave the part of the heartless coquette a fascinating, sultry quality. Her singing of the Habanera made the frequently abused piece shine like new again.” Her recording debut as a soloist was with the Little Orchestra Society (Thomas Scherman conducting) in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under the aegis of Music Appreciation Records. Having traveled the world including Korea, China, Japan, she was also a resident of Leonia, Bordentown, and Fort Lee in New Jersey and Chester, New York. All will remember her as an epicure and painter with a genuine warmth of character, progressive social values, but most of all as a singer. Wife of many years to pianist and conductor, M. David Shapiro (d. 2009) and mother to Caralyn Anne Shapiro (d. 2001), she is survived by two sons, Peter Raphael Shapiro and Joseph Adam Shapiro.
