In memory of Madeleine Feng "Maddy" Hsu, a little girl whose exuberant spirit was snuffed out too soon, but who continues to inspire and evoke memories of joy in all who knew her. Madeleine was born on July 10, 2006, in Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA. This tiny spark of life, however, was extinguished tragically in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012. Remembered as a petite princess with a big personality, Madeleine was known for her ceaseless energy and her thirst for the next big adventure. Whether she was dancing, skipping, or hopping, life for Maddy was a race, a dance that she was always excited to partake in. Her passion for music was profound, often seen singing along to the radio or playing the piano. Her determination was striking for someone so young, often found riding her bike without training wheels the day they were taken off or conquering waves at the beach. Every act of hers, no matter how small, was fueled by enthusiasm and determination. From swimming at the pool to devouring books about fairies, princesses, and the beloved Pinkalicious series, Madeleine was engaged 100% from the moment she woke up till she fell asleep, exhausted but fulfilled. She was an avid reader who loved running and dancing, a born leader in her own right. Recollections of her shy yet sweet nature from Karen Dryer, a neighbor and a family friend, present a heartfelt picture of Maddy. According to Dryer, Madeleine's face would light up at the sight of Dryer's golden retriever when she was dropped off by the school bus every day. These simple moments of pure joy are testament to Madeleine's love for life and the small pleasures it held. Madeleine's memory is honored and kept alive through playgrounds dedicated to her. In 2014, the United Methodist Church of Woodbury dedicated a playground in her memory. The same year, West Islip Beach opened a playground that honored her spirit. A sign at the beach quotes her words, "I love learning because I love to read," reminding visitors of her love for books and learning. Her life, although cut short, was lived with zest and determination that continues to inspire. Her family keeps her memory alive through their words and memories shared on mysandyhookfamily.org. Madeleine's life was indeed a dance and a race, one that she led with absolute grace and determination. Her energy, her love for life, and her determination to seize the day will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who knew her. Madeleine Feng "Maddy" Hsu, a life that was tragically cut short but lived with an intensity that many aspire for. Her spirit continues to live on, reminding us all to embrace life with determination, joy, and a song in our hearts. We remember you, Maddy, and in our hearts, your dance continues. Written by: Alan Owen ~~ From her parents: To our beautiful, joyful daughter, a petite princess with a big personality: We remember how life for you was a dance and a race. You loved to run ahead to the next big adventure. Always running…never walking but sometimes dancing, skipping and hopping to whatever you were going to do next. A music lover you loved to sing along with the radio and play the piano. Everything you did, you did with enthusiasm and determination, riding your bike without training wheels the day they were taken off, jumping waves at the beach, swimming at the pool. Once you set your mind to do something it was as good as done. So energetic, you ran, played and strived at 100% from the time you awoke until you fell asleep exhausted at night, only resting quietly to read books about fairies, princesses and Pinkalicious. You were an amazing little girl.
