Mabel Rebecca Hoyt Bacon 1876 - 1968

Mabel Rebecca (Hoyt) Bacon of Pleasantville, Westchester County, New York United States was born in 1876 in New York, Kings County to Charles Newton Hoyt and Rebecca Gladding Mahony Hoyt. She had siblings Geo Hoyt and Louisa Hoyt. She married Ralph Frederick Bacon, and had children Ralph Hoyt Bacon, Samuel Bacon, George Gladding Bacon, and Frederick Mason Baon. Mabel Bacon died at age 92 years old in 1968.

In 1876, in the year that Mabel Rebecca Hoyt Bacon was born, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."

In 1881, Mabel was merely 5 years old when on November 19th, a meteorite landed a few miles southwest of Odessa, Ukraine. According to one report: "About 7 o'clock one morning a bright and serpentine tail of fire was seen passing over the town by the inhabitants of Odessa, and M. Prendel, editor of one of the Odessa papers, surmising that the phenomenon betokened a fall of meteorites, offered a reward to any person who would bring him one. Three days afterward a gentleman of Grossliebental brought him one which had been found by a peasant who was nearly frightened out of his senses at its fall. It fell beside him while at work in his field and buried itself .55 meters (almost 2 ft) into the ground." The recovered piece was about 17.5 lbs.
