Lynn Ann (Gold) Reister's History: 1971 - 2001

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

On May 24th 2001 the body of Lynn, a Captain in the United States Army, was found in her home by her husband, Roger who was a Sergeant also serving in the US Army a Sergeant. Lynn was 6 months pregnant and they also had a 4 yr old son. Lynn and Roger had been married for 5 years but the marriage was "troubled", with each accusing the other of having had multiple affairs. Other people had heard Roger complaining that if they obtained a divorce, Lynn might get custody of their son. He was also concerned that he would have to pay child support. When Roger returned after working on the base all day and in the company of their 4 year old son, they found Lynn. who had been stabbed 6 times around the head and neck and had six "defense wounds" on her hands. The defense wounds lead investigators to conclude that she has fought for her life. Previous to her murder, Lynn had consented to Roger's brother, Rodney, moving into their home so that Rodney could get his life together. Rodney had been in trouble with the law, not for violent acts but for minor crimes. Eventually, Rodney was convicted of murdering Lynn. He appealed the conviction but his appeal was denied. In the appeal, the Court summarized Lynn's murder this way: "On May 24, 2001, the thirty-year-old deceased, Lynn Reister, was found with her throat slashed in a bedroom of her home in El Paso, Texas. She was about six months pregnant and she had defensive wounds on her hands. The ensuing investigation centered upon her husband, Roger Reister, and her brother-in-law, the Appellant, Rodney Reister. The investigation revealed that Roger Reister was a sergeant in the Army and his wife, Lynn, was a captain. Their marriage was in difficulty, and when Lynn Reister was deployed to Saudi Arabia in March, 2000, Roger stayed behind and engaged in partying activity at their house. He also had sexual relations with several woman. The evidence adduced at trial revealed that Roger Reister became concerned that if his wife found out about his activities, the military would take action against him and he would lose custody of the couple s son, and he would have to pay child support. He began soliciting various people to kill his wife. Appellant was one of those people. The killer was to be paid from life insurance proceeds and from other property. Roger Reister recruited one individual to kill his wife, but the attempt failed when that individual was scared off by a neighbor. Roger Reister became concerned as his wife was soon to be transferred to Minnesota to teach ROTC. Appellant agreed to kill his sister-in-law. Roger Reister arranged for Appellant {Rodney} to enter the home. He surprised Lynn Reister in bed and killed her with a knife. The police investigation revealed a bloody palm print on her body made by Appellant. A warrant issued for Appellant. After his arrest, Appellant confessed during questioning to having killed Lynn Reister at the behest of his brother." There are so many disturbing aspects of what was truly a brutal murder, not the least of which is that her husband pretended to find her body and involved their 4-year-old son in the sham. There were so many twists and turns during the investigation that at least 2 shows - Dateline and ID's "Shadow of Doubt" - highlighted the crime on their shows. While both Roger and Rodney were convicted of murdering Lynn, Roger still blames his brother and proclaims his innocence. Pregnant Army Commander Found With Throat Slit After Missing Her Own Goodbye Party

Army Capt. Lynn Reister was excited to start a new chapter in her life as an ROTC teacher, but the 30-year-old was found brutally murdered in her El Paso, Texas home before she had the chance.

By Jill Sederstrom

The soldiers and staff at the Fort Bliss military base gathered to bid their beloved Commander Capt. Lynn Reister goodbye on May 24, 2001 before the pregnant mom embarked on a new job.

Those she supervised had ordered a special plaque for the farewell party to commemorate the contributions the 30-year-old had made during her time at with the Army unit.

“She inspired people and that’s maybe why she made such a great commander,” Army veteran Debbie Moore told “Dateline: Secrets Uncovered," airing Wednesdays at 8/7c on Oxygen. “She inspired her troops. She inspired those that worked for her to want to do well.”

But Lynn would never arrive at the party held in her honor.

She was found dead with her throat slashed in her El Paso home, cutting her life, as well as that of her unborn child, short, and leaving her 4-year-old son without a mother.

Lynn’s husband, Roger, said he found his slain wife in the bedroom of their home.

"I just got home,” Roger, who was heavily panting, told the 911 dispatcher. “My wife is dead.”

Throughout her career, Lynn had been fighting overseas and had been in charge of the Army’s air defense artillery in Saudi Arabia — but she lost her life to an enemy much closer to home.

Lynn grew up with a brother and two younger sisters in the military town of Pensacola, Florida. She earned her own officers commission from Vermont’s Norwood University and was later stationed in Germany, where she met Moore, one of her closest friends.

“Lynn was very intelligent,” Moore recalled. “She knew how to bring out the best in people.”

The women often spent free Saturday nights at an Army bar on base, where Lynn caught the eye of Roger, an enlisted soldier.

“She had a smile that just, you know, lit up the room,” Roger told "Dateline" correspondent Andrea Canning.

The pair tied the knot and before long they welcomed their first son. Roger seemed to relish the role of being a father.

“He would bring him up to visit and you know, they would play and he seemed very happy being a dad,” Lynn’s assistant told Canning.

But the couple also had their challenges. The military lifestyle meant that they often had to endure long periods apart and when their son was 4 years old, Lynn was deployed to Saudi Arabia. While she was away, Roger was often seen out partying with a group of young teenagers and hosted alcohol-fueled parties at their home. When word got out to Lynn halfway across the world, she wasn’t pleased.

“Our marriage cannot withstand another deployment like this. Period,” she said in one message left on the couple’s answering machine.

When she returned, Roger convinced Lynn to let his troubled brother Rodney come live with them. Rodney had been on probation on Florida but was allowed to move to El Paso, Texas, where the family was stationed, after Lynn agreed to write the court a letter taking responsibility for him.

She also found out she was pregnant with the couple’s second child. With her family growing, Lynn decided she wanted to stay closer to them and put in a transfer to teach ROTC in Minnesota.

“She was going to be a teacher. It was something that she was really looking forward to,” Roger said.

But before she ever started the new position, Lynn was brutally murdered.

After finding no signs of a robbery, investigators concluded Lynn had been targeted. But who would have wanted the beloved military leader dead?

“It could be anybody,” El Paso Det. Gonzalo Chavarria said. “It could be a neighbor. It could be a lover. She was a Captain, she was a supervisor, and we thought about her troops and her subordinates and maybe somebody that she might have disciplined.”

Investigators felt certain the one person who couldn’t have killed Lynn that day was her husband, Roger. He had a solid alibi and had been seen all day by his coworkers.

But detectives soon learned that there had been tension between Lynn and Rodney, who had become an unwelcome house guest.

“There were times where he would just lay around all day long,” Moore recalled, adding it had become a “not very good relationship” between Lynn and Rodney, and Roger had asked his younger brother to move out.

Rodney initially cooperated with authorities and suggested another possible suspect, a woman who he said had a crush on Roger. But investigators discovered the relationship between the woman and Roger had gone much deeper — the pair were having a full-blown affair and the woman, who was 19, was pregnant.

Lynn had even gone to the woman's home once to try to talk and work things out. Despite the betrayal, Lynn had remained committed to trying to make her relationship work.

“I think it was important to Lynn that her family stay together and that her son be raised by you know, a mother and father, and that she would work it out,” Moore said.

Her devotion may have been a deadly mistake.

Police were able to link the murder to Rodney through a bloody palm print found on Lynn’s arm.

When he was confronted with the evidence, Rodney allegedly confessed to the crime and told police that he had only killed Lynn because his brother asked him to carry out the murder. Rodney said Roger had helped him prepare the weapon and had even laid out a spare set of clothes Rodney could change into after the killing, investigators alleged.

“Roger wanted a life insurance policy, he wanted custody of his young son. He knew that if his affair became apparent that he’d face consequences in the military, including prosecution and military jail,” prosecutor John Gibson explained of this theory in the case. “He didn’t want to move to follow Lynn and her career to Minnesota. He wanted to stay and he wanted to party back here in El Paso.”

Investigators also spoke to six people from Roger’s inner circle who said they knew he wanted Lynn dead, including two who said Roger had asked them to carry out the deadly act.

Rodney — who would later refuse to testify against his brother — was convicted as a civilian of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Roger was found guilty of solicitation of murder and given four life sentences, according to the El Paso Times.

He continues to profess his innocence from behind bars, placing the blame for his wife’s death solely on his brother.

“I love my wife,” he told Canning from a Texas state prison. “We were trying to build a future together.”

This is a bit spooky . I was just trying to find my possible Armstrong relatives because My Father never knew his birth parents only knew his siblings and his parents names and age on their birth certificates. Their father as on the certificates is Louis j Armstrong age 30 in 1943 in Stl,MO that would put his birth year around 1913 and I am not really having much luck. when I came across this site and Lynn's pic. It Almost could of be a pic of myself as female, Not only I'm a Armstrong I was also born in 1971 my mom always told me that I was over a month late witch would of made my birth around May . My Armstrong nose had been broken the same place as hers and when I still had teeth our k9s and hair were just alike.
As I was reading Lynn's obituary a cold chill creeped over me . When I was growing up I would have a reoccurring dreams of my infant daughter and myself being killed when I turned 30 by my wife. I was becoming convinced that It was coming true when in the yr 2000 my 2nd daughter was born we mutually spilt up after I caught her cheating on me for the fifth time and she didn't want to continue in helping raising our children together). She gave me full custody of our two girls and she sent her 2 boys to the oldest boys father in Vermont and we moved far away from each other.
Even more similarities. I had joined the Us Army too and had big Military career in mind but I didn't reenlist after 8 yrs as a Combat engineer because my oldest daughter was born and I didn't trust my wife's ability to handle 2 toddler's and a infant by herself and I was right. All she wanted to do is run the streets of Bremerton Wash with her friends and mess around with the Navy Men . Sorry for my going on about my wife and her infidelities' but It has a lot to do with my fear of my reoccurring nightmares coming true for me and my Children . For me the warning signs that I observed in my own life journey it may of saved my life but who knows .Another thing that Lynn and myself may have a connection to each other is She was working for her MBA at Webster University. I had worked for Webster University as a cook around 1999 I was fired for defending myself from a black co-worker with a butcher knife and I hurt him bad and of course he pulled the race card out.
I got fired and he didn't. otherwise I could of still be working there today. I loved that job. I do not know when Lynn started her classes or what campus she went to it was just nutters of the fact that we could of crossed paths at some point in our possible doppelganger lives. O I just remembered my ex wife's middle name believe it or not it is Lynn.
