Lucille Steffen of Dubuque overlooks the flooded parts of Dubuque, Iowa during 1965. In 1965, the Mississippi jumped its banks and flooded a good portion of the city of Dubuque. This and several other disasterous floods led to the construction of the flood wall along the Mississippi. As a result, in recent years when the Mississippi reached flood stages, Dubuque was realitively unaffected, while other towns without floodwall protection (such as Davenport, Iowa) suffered severe damage from flood waters.
