Lottie Anderson 1911 - 1981

Lottie Anderson of River Grove, Cook County, Illinois was born on March 12, 1911, and had siblings Ben Wojton, Frank Wojton, and Hank Wojton. She was married to Walter Surmac and they later divorced. She had children Lorraine Joan Montemagni and Arnold Anderson. Lottie Anderson died at age 70 years old in June 1981.

In 1911, in the year that Lottie Anderson was born, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole, along with four fellow Norwegian explorers. After hearing that Peary had beaten him to the North Pole, Amundsen decided to tackle the South Pole. On December 14th, he succeeded.

In 1931, at the age of 20 years old, Lottie was alive when in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.
