Lois's mother Frances Luciel (Patton) Bergkoetter was born and raised in the city of St. Louis. Lois had no siblings. Lois married her 1st husband Jackie Wayne Sayre from Ohio. Lois and Jackie had 2 sons who's names were Charles Wayne Sayre and Melvin Dean Sayre. Lois married 2nd husband John Leslie Coleman in April 1973. Lois and John had 1 daughter named Dawn Marie (Coleman) Mcculloh. Lois married 3rd husband Charles Elliot Richardson, no children between Lois and Charles.

The origins of the fire are unknown but it killed 492 people - the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. Hundreds more were injured.
