Lewis Gaiter's History: 1884 - 1980

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

He worked in the sanitation department of Los Angeles City. He told me that he trained the mules to turn the wagon around on their own when they came to the end of the block where he lived. He homesteaded the land on Boulder Street next to Malabar Elementary School and built a house on weekends in less than a year's time. He was a soft-spoken, and gentle person who raised chickens, rabbits, and kept a garden with the best fig tree, sage bushes, collard greens, and more.

Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.

In 1919, by the time he was 35 years old, in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.
