He was married to Clara B (Bowen) Worley, and they were together until Clara's death. He had children Harrison Grover Worley III and Lyndon Duane Worley. Lester Worley died at age 92 years old on March 18, 2013.

  • Introduction

    Dad was one of a kind. Brusque, opinionated, thought he was always right, 6’4” and imposing. A Sheriffs Deputy for many years and always walked like a cop, a rancher near Redding for some years (his dream job), and an investigator for the DA’s office in Oregon for many years. Loved his family, his siblings, loved his mother deeply and despised his father. All in all, I came to know him best in the last 6 years of his life. All the bluster, teasing, etc. was a cover up for a man bested by life’s challenges and not being able to meet them.

  • Ethnicity & Family History

    Dad’s mother Etta was from My Ayr. Iowa and his father from Indiana. Ethnicity? His grand parents and great grands were the same: Hardworking, religious, poor white folk mostly. He told me Grandma would give him eggs to sell if he wanted to go see a movie.

    Born and raised in the US. Lived in Washington, Oregon and California.

  • Early Life & Education

    He attended Excelsior High School in Norwalk, CA, where his siblings also went. I believe he graduated, and was very good in mathematics.

  • Religious Beliefs

    No! He did tell me once that he allayed his sisters fears by confessing to her that he believed in God. That was the one and only time he ever said anything about his beliefs to me.

  • Military Service

    Dad was a Sargent in the US Army and served in the Soloman Islands. Caught dysentery and became a beanpole, was in Fiji for some time and said they were the nicest people he’d ever met.

  • Personal Life & Family

    In 2012 or so, I was able to track down his LA County Sheriffs patrol-car partner, “Whitey”. They had lost contact many years earlier but had been very close friends. Whitey traveled up to see him in No California a couple of times. I’ve no doubt that was an emotional reunion for both.

There was a nightclub of sorts that my parents enjoyed - The Turf Club - in or around Long Beach, or Bellflower, CA. This may be there, but I am not sure. This was taken before I was born (1952) and perhaps before they married. Virginia Gladys Stubbs Trickel and Lester Duane Worley.
