Leslie George Brooke of Melbourne East Australia was born in 1861 to Mary Maria (Gardner) Brooke and George Ellis Brooke. He had siblings Leslie George Brooke, Winifred Louisa Brooke, Harold Clifford Brooke, Stanley Francis Brooke, Amy Lillian Brooke, and Albert Henry Brooke. Leslie Brooke died at age 44 years old in 1905 in Melbourne East.

In 1871, at the age of just 10 years old, Leslie was alive when on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.
