    Szymecki -Lillian Leocadia (nee Mazierski) Beloved wife of the late Michael Szymecki; dear mother of Thaddeus (Dorothy) Szymecki; dear grandmother of Mrs. George (Christine) Kuntz, Theodore Szymecki; great-grandmother of Kelly Ann Kuntz; dear sister of Matthew (Rose) Meyers, Mrs. Theodore (Irene) Wickham of Birmingham, Mich., the late William Mazierski, Jeannette Kolk and Thaddeus Mazierski. Funeral Friday morning at 9:30 from the Kolano Funeral Home, 396 Amherst St and 10 o'clock at Assumption Church. Viewing Wednesday evening 7 - 9 and Thursday 2 - 5 and 7 - 9 pm. Relative and friends are invited. Mrs. Szymecki was a member of Wieniec Polek Lodge No. 1591 P.N.A. - The Buffalo News (Buffalo, New York) Thursday, August 30, 1973 on page 68.

In 1898, in the year that Leocadia Szymecki was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
