He had siblings Annie Jane Cowen, William James Cowen, Emilie Julia (Cowen) Hearle, Victoria Cowen, Henry Charles Edward Cowen, Edward Tronson Elphinstone Cowen, Minnie Lane Cowen, John Frederick Cowen, Stanley Michael Cowen, and Mary Ellen (Cowen) Hearle. Leighton Cowen died at age 33 years old on July 10, 1917 in Flanders France, and was buried at Nieuport Memorial in Belgium.
