Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs 1871 - 1937

Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs was born on October 31, 1871 in Davidson County, North Carolina United States to John Hubbard Walser and Eliza Jane (Myers) Walser, and had siblings Malinda Josephine (Walser) Hege, Susan Edith (Walser) Shoaf, Mary Ellen Walser, and Mittie (Walser) Foster. She married Robert Obey Berrier in 1888. They had a child Clara Vestal (Hobbs) Walser. She married Daniel Jackson Hobbs in 1893. They had children Annie (Hobbs) Snyder, Robert Holt Hobbs, and Leo Arvil Hobbs. Laura Hobbs died at age 66 years old on December 8, 1937 in Tyro.

  • Introduction

    This woman's first husband was lynched. He'd been accused of shooting his mother-in-law (Laura's mother) in Oct 1899 as he tried to take his young child, Clara, from her care while his wife was in the asylum in Morganton. His mother-in-law resisted and he reportedly shot her. A group of men from the area lynched him. His widow remarried. (submitted by Suzannah McCuen)

His impeachment and removal was related to charges arising from his attempted suppression of the Ku Klux Klan.
Did you know?
In 1884, at the age of merely 13 years old, Laura was alive when on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.
