Mother to two children that she absolutely adored Kristen "Noelle" Downing and James "Jimmy " Robert Downing Jr. 1981 Louisiana Strawberry Festival Queen, Graceful Dancer and Avid animal lover She died on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at her home in Pumpkin Center, Louisiana after courageous battle with colorectal cancer at the age of 38. She was a native of Ponchatoula, Louisiana. She earned an Art Education degree from Southeastern Louisiana University, SLU Lionette, 2-time Miss Congeniality award recipient in the Miss SLU pageant, 1981 Louisiana Strawberry Festival Queen, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Junior Auxiliary, a recipient of Junior Auxiliary Daughters of the American Revolution award, member of Krewe of Omega and an active member of SLU Alumni Association. She served many years on the Strawberry Festival board and was an avid animal lover. Survivors include her husband, Dr. James R. Downing Sr.; a daughter, Kristen "Noelle" Downing; a son, James "Jimmy" R. Downing Jr., all of Hammond; grandmother, Edna Poche Drude Gillman, Ponchatoula; and numerous fur babies. She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel T. "Buddy" Recatto; maternal grandfather, Merlin L. Drude and and paternal grandmother, Ellen McGowan Miliota
