  • Introduction

Kostas is my maternal grandfather. He owned diners in Union City, NJ and one in Mountainside, NJ. He was born in Tripoli, Libya, but was raised on the Greek island of Chios. He left his island at age 13 to work and travel on ships, and jumped ship as soon as he arrived in NYC. He found the Greek Community there and thrived. Kostas married Satira Mavrotheris in 1937. He was 28 and Satira, 18. They had five children, Catherine (My mother), Leo (who died from a brain tumor at age 10), Antonia (Annie), Theodora and Chris. As of this writing, in June 2020, only Theodora survives. My grandfather was a very generous man.
