Kathleen Imelda (Harrington) Mossop was born in 1890 to Thomas Stack Harrington and Honorah (Duggan) Harrington, and had siblings Thomas Clarence Stack Harrington, John Harrington, and Margaret Aileen (Harrington) Hanley. She married Charles Henry Mossop, and died at age 81 years old on December 4, 1972. Kathleen Mossop was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton.

    The Age, Melbourne. 5th December 1972. MOSSOP.- On December 4th, ( in hospital ), Kathleen Imelda, dearly loved wife of the late Charles Henry Mossop, of 544 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne, loved sister of Thomas ( deceased, 1st A.I.F. ), John and Margaret ( Mrs. Hanley ). Rest in peace.

In 1890, in the year that Kathleen Imelda (Harrington) Mossop was born, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.

In 1942, when she was 52 years old, from January 7th through April 9th, the Battle of Bataan was fought in the Philippines. At the end of the battle, the U.S. and Filipino forces surrendered and a three-year occupation of the Philippines by Japan began. Between 60,000 and 80,000 American and Filipino soldiers surrendered and were marched around 60 to 69 miles - most were beaten, abused, or killed. Named the Bataan Death March, it was later declared to be a war crime.
