  • Introduction

    A straight-A student when she disappeared, those who knew her didn't believe that Kahealani had run away. And although police couldn't confirm them, there were rumors that she had been picked up "by a man in a car." Last seen when she and a friend departed a school bus on December 10, Kahealani never got home. Her parents, Vincent and Lehua, were at her grandparent's (father's parents) home. They thought that her 17 yr old brother was in charge and he said that he thought their parents were with Kahealani. Only when they were all returned to the house at 10p that night did everyone realize that she was unaccounted for. Her mother didn't call the police until 8a the next morning. The response was quick and complete - involving search dogs, scores of police searching the are, and a helicopter. At the time of her disappearance, Kahealani was described as "5 ft 2 inches, 110 lbs, with a slim build" Her body was found by a hiker on December 13, a few days after her disappearance. Police arrested Christopher Aki, a family friend and the father of Kahealani's nephew, with her murder. Although Aki plead "not guilty", he was convicted of manslaughter in May 2004. He appealed in 2006 and his original conviction was upheld. A memorial was held on December 22 2002 at Word of Life Christian Center.
