In 1826, in the year that Jospeh Vincent Geary was born, on March 10th, João VI, King of Portugal and the former Emperor of Brazil, died after a short illness. Six days earlier, the King had become ill after eating at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. An investigative autopsy in the late 1990's discovered that he had been killed by arsenic poisoning - having enough arsenic in his body to kill two people.

In 1854, at the age of 28 years old, Jospeh was alive when on May 30th, the Kansas–Nebraska Act became law. The act created both the Kansas Territory and the Nebraska Territory, which would determine for themselves if they would be pro-slavery or free. Both territories allowed slavery but it caused contention within the territories.
