  • Introduction

    Joseph Konigstein was my mothers mothers father. My name is Burke Leon, my Mother was Frieda Green Leon and her mother was Jennie konigstein Green. I dont know anything about Joseph Konigsteins except he was born about 1856 to 1859. He married Riva Kirsch ( or was it katz as a last name) According to notes my mother (frieda green Leon) left me he was " well educated, studious in history, theology and science but could never quite earn a living. He was introverted . He was high strung and prone to hystrionics.I have no idea of his siblings or his wifes siblings." family rumors were that he ran away from military service in Russia. His wife was the one who held the family together.

In 1859, in the year that Joseph Konigstein was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
