    Joseph John "Buzz" Zais was born to Peter Joseph Zais (1912 - 1993) and Josephine "Josie" Kranig (1919 - 2009). Both of his parents were born in Wisconsin. He had five siblings: two sisters and three brothers. A veteran of the United States Marines, Joseph enlisted on August 10, 1966 and was discharged on June 1, 1968. He served in Vietnam and earned a Purple Heart. Joseph Zais married Sheryl D. Sclater on February 14, 1976 in Dallas County, Texas and they had three daughters. They divorced on May 5, 1988 in Tarrant County, Texas.

Zais was born, on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.

In 1955, he was just 7 years old when on September 30th, movie star James Dean, 24, died in a car accident. He was headed in his new Porsche 550 to a race in Salinas California when, traveling at 85 mph, he collided with a 1950 Ford Tudor, also speeding, driven by a 23 year old college student. Dean died, his passenger and the other driver survived.
