  • Personal Life & Family

The Woodend Star. Vic. 7th January 1922. Death of an Old Resident of Macedon. Mr. Joseph Firth, superintendent of the Macedon State Nursery, for the past 37 years, died suddenly at his home about 2:30 a.m. on the 4th inst. The deceased gentleman, who was 60 years of age, and had lived in the district for nearly 50 years was widely known and popular with all classes. The news of his death came as a great shock to many who were unaware that the illness which had overtaken him only a few days previously, was likely to effect such a tragically sudden ending. The passing of Joseph Firth removes one of Macedon's oldest residents and landmarks. He came to the district about 30 years ago to take up the position of head gardener on what is now the property of Miss Cunninghame, at Macedon Upper. Later he was employed by the late David Syme at what is now Government Cottage, and from there he went to the State Nursery at Macedon where he occupied the position of Superintendent for the time stated. He was always to the fore in fostering or furthering anything likely to benefit the district, and ever ready to place his services and sound advice at the disposal of any worthy object. He was one of the pioneers of the movement which brought about the establishment of the Working Men's Hall at Macedon Upper. Not only was his assistance and advice as to tree planting, garden designing, etc., given freely in the locality of Macedon, but Woodend and other parts of the surrounding district can bear witness as to the highly appreciated, gratuitous help rendered by the late Mr. Firth. Woodend Parks and Gardens and the Race Club Committee have voiced their appreciation from time to time. A wife and the following twelve children remain to mourn their loss :- Joseph ( Tasmania ), Henry ( Port Campbell ), James and Mabel ( Briagolong ), John ( Cootamundra ), Mr. Smith, Mrs. Marshall, Nellie and Mollie ( Trentham ), Mrs. Rutherford, George, Edward and Lorna ( Macedon )
