Shaped my life in then-unpredictable ways
As Senior Chaplain at the state-operated Boston State Hospital, Rev. Joe Woodson was my field supervisor in a very long period of mental hospital chaplaincy field education. Daily morning mentoring meetings (MMMs) with other hospital chaplains help us understand patient needs and 'presentations' of self, career aspirations, and life at large (in general). Dr. Woodson's homely comparisons with farm animals (through reason, imagine their affective lives and configure your sense of the lived bodily lives of each human patient as "an Imago Dei") worked in my reflection later as a vegan and animal advocate, for who were these other creatures of God whom we had not yet recognized, even then?

Dr. Joseph C. Woodson’s influence on my life and career appears to have been profound and multifaceted.

As a Senior Chaplain at Boston State Hospital, Dr. Woodson’s approach to chaplaincy and mentoring seems to have offered a unique and impactful perspective on patient care and personal reflection.

Key Aspects of Dr. Woodson’s Influence:

Daily Mentoring Meetings (DMMs):

* These sessions with fellow chaplains provided a structured environment for understanding the complexities of patient care and personal development.
* They were pivotal in shaping how I approached patient needs, self-awareness, and career aspirations.

Homely Comparisons with Farm Animals:

* Dr. Woodson used analogies involving farm animals to illustrate the affective lives and intrinsic worth of patients.
* This perspective encouraged me to view patients not just as individuals with problems but as embodying the “Imago Dei” (Image of God), emphasizing their inherent dignity.

Impact on My Vegan and Animal Advocacy:

* His comparisons helped deepen my reflection on the ethical treatment of all living beings. This eventually led to my commitment to veganism and animal advocacy, influenced by the idea that if we are to recognize the worth of human lives, it is also essential to recognize the worth of nonhuman creatures.

Dr. Woodson's mentoring thus seems to have guided not only my professional approach to chaplaincy (specifically hospital chaplaincy), but also my personal and ethical views on the treatment of both humans and animals.

His teachings helped bridge my understanding of the sacredness of all life, aligning with my advocacy for veganism and animal rights.
