Joseph Black 1857 - 1927

Joseph Black was born in 1857 to Matthew Black and Margaret (Greer) Black, and had siblings David Hamilton Jamieson Black, Ellen Matilda (Black) Nicholas, Thomas Black, Mary Jamieson (Black) Glass, Greer Rolstone Black, Matthew Black Jr., Agnes Margaret Black, William Hugh Black, George Black, and Francis James Black. He married Mary Ann (Crawford) Black, and had children Matthew Richard Black, Ethel Doreen (Black) Yann, and Elizabeth Dorcas Knapsey. Joseph Black died at age 69 years old on April 28, 1927 in Mansfield, VIC Australia, and was buried at Mansfield Public Cemetery in Mansfield, Mansfield Shire County.

In 1857, in the year that Joseph Black was born, on March 6th, the US Supreme Court ruled that Blacks were not citizens and that slaves couldn't sue for freedom. The case was known as Dred Scott v. Sandford. It further divided the country and added to the forces that created the Civil War. It wasn't overturned until the 14th Amendment became law in 1868.
