Joseph Benjamin Copes Sr. of Higganum, Middlesex County, CT was born on September 16, 1917 at Higganum in Haddam to Bennedetto Copes and Josephina (Malacarne) Copes. He had siblings John Copes, Josephina (Copes) Nemit, Amelia (Copes) Negrelli, Aldo V (Copes) Sr., and Mary J. (Copes) Papa. Joseph was baptized on March 31, 1918 at St Joseph's RC Church 48 Middlesex Turnpike, in Chester. He married Carolyn E (Shaw) Copes on June 7, 1947 in Higganum, Middlesex County, and they were married until Joseph's death on December 5, 1995 in Haddam, Middlesex County. He had children Joseph B. Copes, Jr., Carla L (Copes) Antonowicz, Rosemary Louise (Copes) Moran, and Marrie E (Copes) Chrostex. Joseph Copes was buried in December 1995 at Burr District Cemetery 793 Killingworth Rd, in Haddam.

In 1917, in the year that Joseph B Copes was born, in April, the U.S. entered World War I, declaring war against Germany. President Wilson had previously declared neutrality in the war - a position supported by the majority of Americans - but after Germany declared that they would sink all ships trading with Great Britain and sunk U.S. ships, public opinion began to change. Then the Lusitania was sunk, killing 1,201 - including 128 Americans - and more U.S. ships were sunk. The U.S. could stand aside no longer.

In 1941, Joseph was 24 years old when on June 25th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, prohibiting racial discrimination in the defense industry. EO 8802 was the first federal action to prohibit employment discrimination - without prejudice as to "race, creed, color, or national origin" - in the U.S. Civil Rights groups had planned a march on Washington D.C. to protest for equal rights but with the signing of the Order, they canceled the March.
