Joseph then enlisted in the United States Army on September 17, 1940, in East Orange, New Jersey. At the time of his enlistment, he was 23 years old. He was assigned to the Field Artillery branch and his rank was Private, and he served in the Army of the United States. Joseph was married to Carmella Tortorella (1917-2008). Together they had a daughter together.
