    Joseph Albert Audett was born on Jan 10, 1920 in Seattle, Washington to parents James Durwood Audett (1892-1977) and Dorothy Miriam Guilfoil (1897-1956). He had sisters Dorothy Louise (1917-2010) and Patricia Marie Audett (1925-1977). They grew up in Saugatuck, Allegan, Michigan and Chicago, Cook, Illinois. He enlisted on January 12, 1942 in Chicago Illinois as an Aviation Cadet in the Air Corps. He served in the US Air Force until he was discharged on December 29, 1946. On November 7, 1945 Joseph married Dorothea Ann Driscoll (1921-1996) in Douglas, Allegan, Michigan, USA. Together they had a son named Stephen. He was a founding Member and Senior Vice President of McDonald's restaurant of Canada. At the time of his death in 2001, he was the owner and operator of the McDonalds in Bracebridge and Gavenhurst Canada.

In 1920, in the year that Joseph A Audett was born, on November 2, radio station KDKA began broadcasting in Pittsburgh, PA. This was the first commercial radio broadcast in the United States. Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. People liked it because they could hear about the results of the election between Harding and Cox before the morning papers arrived. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S.

In 1934, by the time he was just 14 years old, on November 11th 1933, an extremely strong dust storm hit South Dakota, stripping topsoil. Other strong dust storms had occurred during 1933. Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
