    Jose was one of my great-grandfathers. He was born in Spain but came to New York from Argentina in the early 1900s with his wife and four boys. He presented himself as a dentist, which he may have been elsewhere, but he was not licensed in New York and soon encountered legal problems. He was fined for practicing without a license. He was again fined and jailed, this time for selling fake dental degrees. During the Spanish influenza pandemic in 1918, he sold "aspirin" tablets throughout the U.S., which he manufactured himself under the name Verandah Chemical Company. The tablets were made primarily of talcum powder, and he soon faced charges from numerous states. He appears to have fled, possibly to Australia or New Zealand. He crossed back into the U.S. in 1936 at Eagle Pass, Texas, and moved to the Los Angeles area. In 1943 he was charged with practicing medicine without a license after marketing a medical cure for alcoholism. He changed his name to avoid any further legal problems before dying.
