John Walker Shilcock 1859 - 1942

John Walker Shilcock of Castlemaine, Mount Alexander Shire County, VIC Australia was born on September 25, 1859 in Castlemaine to Walker Shilcock and Bridget Oneill Shilcock. He had siblings Hannah Maria Shilcock, Elizabeth Shilcock Carpenter, Marsha Shilcock, and Mary Winifred (Shilcock) Hutchinson. He married Margaret Murnane Shilcock in 1883, and had children John Patrick Shilcock, Mabel Winefride Shilcock, and Mary Ellen Shilcock. John Shilcock died at age 82 years old on August 4, 1942 at Sacred Heart Hospital in City of Merri-bek County.

In 1859, in the year that John Walker Shilcock was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
