John Vernon Quarrell of Dereel, Golden Plains Shire County, VIC Australia was born on August 10, 1905 in Dereel to John "Jack" Quarrell and Sophia Louisa (Judge) Quarrell. He had siblings Doris Ellie Louise (Quarrell) Tonkin, Gertrude Mary Quarrell, John Gordon Relvie Quarrell, William Earnest Quarrell, Lillian Ida Quarrell, William Quarrell, and Alma Vendaline Quarrell. John Quarrell died at age 24 years old in May 1930 in Dereel.

In 1905, in the year that John Vernon Stanley Quarrell was born, the Niagara Falls conference was held in Fort Erie, Ontario. Led by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter, a group of African-American men met in opposition to racial segregation and disenfranchisement. Booker T. Washington had been calling for policies of accommodation and conciliation and these two men, along with the others who attended the conference, felt that this was accomplishing nothing. The group was the precursor to the NAACP.

The original estimates were 714,231 casualties - 377,231 French and 337,000 German, an average of 70,000 casualties a month. Current estimates are even larger. The Battle of the Somme was also fought from July through September of the same year. Original estimates were 485,000 British and French casualties and 630,000 German casualties.
