On February 16, 1945, at the age of 21, John registered for the military draft in Jackson, Wisconsin. On March 24, 1942, John T Polashek enlisted in the military in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His service number was 16060522, and he joined the Army Air Corps branch of the United States Army. John held the rank of Private and was a part of the Army of the United States component. During his military service, John was assigned to the 2509 Army Air Field Base Unit. John's service in the military began on December 4, 1943, and he was discharged on October 23, 1945. On September 17, 1946 he married Elmyra Marie Dieter (1923–1991) in Boscobel, Wisconsin, USA. The couple had four children together.

In 1920, in the year that John Thomas Polashek was born, Italian born factory worker Nicola Sacco and fish peddler Bartolomeo Vanzetti were picked up by police on May 5th in connection with the April 15th murder and robbery of a guard and a paymaster at the Slater and Morrill Shoe Company in South Braintree, Mass. Although in later years they were thought to be innocent, they were anarchists and were convicted of the crime and put to death.
