John Thomas Cosgriff was born in 1918 to Patrick Joseph Cosgriff and Honora Angela (Bourke) Cosgriff, and had siblings Michael Francis Cosgriff, Eugene Francis Cosgriff, Kate (Cosgriff) Claxton, and Mary Leitch. John Cosgriff died at age 53 years old in 1971.

In 1918, in the year that John Thomas Cosgriff was born, in July, Russian revolutionaries executed the former Tzar Nicholas II and his immediate family. While it was rumored that two of the children had survived, it was later proven through DNA analysis - when their bodies were found - that the entire family had been killed.

In 1922, by the time he was only 4 years old, on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.
