    John Sidney Ferril was born on February 4, 1916, in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, to parents George and Emma Ferril. As the eldest child, he had two younger sisters, Grace and Emma Ferril. In his early 20s, John worked for the American Stores Company in Drexel Hill, Delaware, Pennsylvania. However, his life took a new direction when he married Mary O'Shea Ferrill in 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The couple had a son together, Gerald K Ferrill, and John settled into a new career as the meat manager at a retail meat manufacturing company in Upper Darby, Delaware, Pennsylvania. As World War II raged on, John felt a call to serve his country. He enlisted on March 9, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served in the Army as a private among the selectees, or enlisted men. His willingness to serve and his bravery in the face of danger are a testament to his dedication to his country and his sense of duty.

In 1916, in the year that John Sidney Ferrill was born, in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.
