In 1916, in the year that John Robert Reeser was born, the Battle of Verdun was fought from February through December. It was the largest and longest battle of World War I, lasting 303 days. More than 35,000 people attended the dedication including Lincoln's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, and many Union and Confederate veterans - although the audience was segregated.
