John “Red” Kelly 1820 - 1866

John Kelly was born in 1820 in County Tipperary Ireland. He was married to Ellen Elizabeth (Quinn) King, and they were together until death separated them. He had children Edward “Ned” Kelly, Margaret Mildred (Kelly) Lloyd, James Kelly, Daniel Kelly, Catherine Ada "Kate" (Kelly) Foster, and Grace (Kelly) Griffiths. John Kelly died at age 46 years old in December 1866 in Avenel, VIC Australia, and was buried at Avenel Cemetery, in Avenel, Strathbogie Shire County.

Did you know?
In 1820, in the year that John “Red” Kelly was born, on February 23rd, a plot to murder the Cabinet of the United Kingdom - called the Cato Street Conspiracy - was discovered in England. Thirteen people were arrested of which five were hanged and decapitated (some people paid for a good view of the hanging, attendance was so large). These were the last beheadings in Great Britain.

In 1832, John was just 12 years old when on November 14th, Charles Carroll - the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence - died at his home in Maryland. He was 95 years old. He signed the Declaration as "Charles Carroll of Carrollton", distinguishing him from several other Charles Carroll's who were living in the area at the time.
