John Newton Baker was born on March 16, 1886 in Knox County, Kentucky United States. He married Gladys Pearl Monroe Baker on May 17, 1917 and they later divorced on May 11, 1923. They had children Robert Baker and Berniece Baker. He married Gertrude Ritze Engle in 1910, and they were married until John's death on September 17, 1951. They had a child Jasper Frederick Baker.

In 1886, in the year that John Newton Baker was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1917, John was 31 years old when Russian government offices were seized and the Romanov's Winter Palace was stormed in the Russian February and October Revolutions. The February revolution resulted in the abdication of Tsar Nicholas and a coalition of the Parliament and workers parties taking control of the government. The October revolution resulted in Lenin and the Bolsheviks taking complete control.
