John Nelson Reynolds of Rockaway Park, Queens County, New York was born on August 11, 1901 in Cressy Australia to William Henry Reynolds and Isabella Nelson Reynolds. He had siblings Stephen Kenneth Reynolds, Allan Robert Reynolds, Neil Alexander Reynolds, Jean Margaret Isabel Reynolds, and Alfred William Reynolds. He married Florence Annie Amelia Mawson in 1926, and had a child Florance Reynolds. John Reynolds died at age 68 years old in January 1970 in Winc.

In 1914, John was only 13 years old when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.
