John Leon Gaborit 1895 - 1980

John Leon Gaborit of Prahran, City of Stonnington County, VIC Australia was born on November 21, 1895 in Cranbourne, City of Casey County to Bridget Catherine Meade Gaborit and Auguste Xavier Gaborit. He had siblings Auguste Exavier Gaborit, Thomas Leopold Gaborit, and Theodore Joseph Gaborit. He married Elizabeth McMahon O'Brien Gaborit in 1920, and had a child Mary Margaret Gaborit. John Gaborit died at age 84 years old on February 22, 1980 in South Yarra, and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery Princes Hwy, in Springvale, City of Greater Dandenong County.

In 1895, in the year that John Leon Gaborit was born, on May 18th, Italy's first motor race was held. The race was 58 miles long - from Turin to Asti and back. Five cars started but only three completed the race. It was won by Simone Federman who drove a Daimler Omnibus - his average speed was 9.6 mph.

In 1904, at the age of only 9 years old, John was alive when the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
