In 1867, in the year that John Leek was born, on March 30th, Alaska was bought by the US from Russia for $7.2 million dollars, which worked out to about 2 cents per acre. The newspapers called it "Seward's Folly" because United States Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase and Alaska was seen as frozen, useless land.

In 1868, he was merely 1 year old when on February 24th, three days after his attempt to dismiss United States Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton - who was opposed to Johnson's leniency towards the former Confederacy - the US House of Representatives voted (126 to 47) to impeach Andrew Johnson. Johnson was later acquitted in the Senate by one vote short of the required 2/3rds.Senators crossed party lines to keep Johnson as President.
