He married Arlyn Sharon Dunetz on September 13, 1969 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, CA and they later divorced circa 1997 in Los Angeles. They had children River Jude Phoenix, Rain Joan Of Arc Phoenix, Joaquin Rafael Phoenix, Liberty Mariposa Phoenix, and Summer Joy Phoenix. He was the parent of Jodean Phoenix.
